(WSFA) – Hollywood, California Hailed as Selma’s hometown hero, Asher HaVon created history as the first resident of Alabama to win an NBC “The Voice” season.
Starry Shows
All through the season, HaVon enthralled judges and viewers alike with his potent performances of pop and soul ballads. Tuesday night saw the happy conclusion of his adventure as the musical judges formally crowned him the champion.
Starting Point of His Travels
HaVon had a breakout performance at the blind auditions, when his version of Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain” won him a three-chair turn. “For you to get up there and sing like you did, using your God-gifted talent that God was so sweet to give you, makes me so proud and happy,” Reba McEntire said, praising his last performance. You handle yourself so nicely and are so royal when you sing.
History and the First Influences
HaVon, 31, was raised on gospel music from his Selma birthplace. He owes early encouragement to his singing ability to both his mother JoAnne Smith and an elementary school teacher. Leading a choir that played for former President Barack Obama on the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery march brought HaVon further notoriety in 2015.
Help from Hometown
HaVon has tremendous hometown support during his tenure on “The Voice.” Selma locals went to see his performances and support him, including his mother JoAnne Smith. Thanking everyone, HaVon remarked, “I feel like I’m standing on the shoulders of so many people that are truly praying for me.” That is palpable to me. Well wishes are felt, and they are very appreciated.
Congratulation Message from the Mayor
Selma In a poignant message, Mayor James Perkins said, “We are extremely proud of Asher, and we look forward to receiving you back in Selma to celebrate your success.” Nice work. A proud Selma.
With his success on “The Voice,” Asher HaVon not only achieves a personal victory but also makes his hometown of Selma proud and joyful by demonstrating his extraordinary ability and the tremendous community support that enabled him to reach this milestone.
